San Diego Beauty and FitnessShopLocalSD: Bella BrazilUnwanted follicles are a no-no during bikini season By Rebekah Sager • Sat, Jun 12th, 2010
Adri Rebis: Queen of the Brazilian. Photo by Rebekah Sager Summer is when many women begin to consider baring it all (nearly) in a bikini. Often, the first step is a trip down south to Brazil--Bella Brazil Salon that is. If you watch follicle trends, then you know that it’sgauche for those pesky pubes to be seen poking out of this season’s swimsuit. Thankfully, there’s the hottie straight from Brazil to save the women of San Diego from a potential fashion faux pas. When Adri Rebis arrived in San Diego 12 years ago from a small town in Brazil called Paranagua, she worked as a nanny in Coronado. She wasin the U.S. to learn English so she could return to Brazil and pursue her dream of becoming a flight attendant. Growing hairier day-by-day during the visit, she began to frantically searchfor someone who could rid her of the unwanted growth. “No one knew what a 'Brazilian' was," she says. “They only did the sides.” She’d been having the procedure done since she was 13 years old. “Every young girl in Brazil does it," says Rebis. "Women there hate hair.” Instead of complaining, Adri got ingenious. She used her next visit back home to learn the Brazilian art of hair removal.

After initiating her friends and getting the needed licenses, she opened her own shop, called Bella Brazil, located in Pacific Beach. More the norm to be hairless than not today, the “Brazilian” has become all the rage for the ladies (and their very excited partners). A clean, smooth, and hairless who-ha and backside is almost a given. Bella Brazil is one of the best in town because she follows the lead of Brazilian aestheticians, and uses a hard wax she has imported from Spain. “It’s the best because it shrink-wraps the hair,”says Rebis. As opposed to using the traditional hot wax, having cloth strips applied, and the hair removed by pulling the strips off, Bella Brazil applies her special wax and pulls off the wax itself when it hardens--giving the best results with a lot less pain. When it comes to pain, Adri says everybody has a different level of tolerance. About five percent of her clients experience a lot of pain. The rest, she says are okay the first time, but it she assures them that it gets less and less unpleasant every time after. Shaving is known to cause razor bumps and waxing can as well.Rebis recommends using a loofah sponge a day or so after every wax and continuing to apply it in the shower every day. The scrubbing effect lessens the chance of bumps and ingrown hairs. “You feel all clean and shiny, and slick during intercourse,” shesaysabout why women choose to go with the “Brazilian.” The results last on average 10 days to two weeks, then there’s the insufferable grow-out period. Pain or high cost ($50 per session) doesn’t seem to matter. Women are dedicated, even mildly addicted to the “Brazilian” and according to Rebis, their partners are, too.
