San Diego Beauty and FitnessThe New Well: A boutique Weight Loss And Wellness ClinicKick off your 2011 a slimmer, trimmer and hotter you By Rebekah Sager • Sun, Jan 16th, 2011
The New Well Weight loss and Wellness Clinic guarantees participants who follow their program will lose two to three pounds a week. So, if you’re really serious about that New Year’s resolution to get in shape for 2011, this might just be your first stop. The New Well opened its first clinic in downtown San Diego six months ago. The owner, Evelyn Olson-Lamden, also owns the building. Feeling as much like a spa as a workout space, the all green company (from the furniture to the paper used for promos, etc …) sits tranquilly on the second floor of the art deco building. In addition to the workout facilities, the boutique clinic offers a spa room, Color Science cosmetics, New Well pharmaceutical-grade supplements, snack bars and the Cell Renewal Skincare line. The program is designed around four basic pillars. 1. Nutrition: Eating only whole foods and learning how to shop, cook and eat out in healthy ways. No gimmicky diets. All real food found at grocery stores. 2. Exercise: Moderate amounts of exercise that include cardio and body sculpting, using the 26-minute New Well circuit of machines--similar to Curves. 3. Accountability: One-on-one counseling throughout the process. 4. Relaxation: Use of a tranquility room complete with a massage chair, as well as facials and cellulite treatments, all using the Synergy machine. The machine was recently featured on the Dr. Oz TV show. It’s a non-invasive and effective treatment for combating cellulite. New Well guarantees people will up to four inches at their waists in 16 treatments using Synergy.
Say goodbye to cellulite. Photo by Rebekah sager The first step every participant must endure is the "weigh-in." Done on the state-of the art Tanita body fat scale, this little devil machine is able to measure weight, body fat and muscle mass, body mass index, body water and basil metallic rate--a frightening set of numbers even for the in-shape human. Next, one of the NW trainers teaches the participant how to use the exercise circuit. One of the highlights of the circuit is the Vibra Trim machine. Invented by Russian astronauts to re-new the loss of bone mass from being in outer space, the machine is able to retract and expand the body’s muscles 900 times in 30 seconds, which helps with circulation and healing. NASA continues to support whole body vibration for its ability to increase bone density--I tried it, I don’t know if it works because one try isn’t enough to tell, but I will say that it’s truly vibrate-y fun. The New Well’s diet plan is not a quickie. The whole program is about a lifestyle change, and it can take participants up to a year, at the cost of $1200 on average, to lose the usual desired 30 pounds. “People need to be very dedicated. One of our mottos is that we empower women to be well,” says sales manager LaBonne Bailey. “I’m getting my results slowly and steadily. I’ve survived breast cancer and recently gained forty pounds from the Tamoxifen,” Baily says. But, as anyone who’s ever tried to lose a significant amount of weight knows, slow and steady always wins the race.
