CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION: Girl Scouts Urban Campout

It was a groovy Girl Scout gala

By Sun, Sep 19th, 2010

Five hundred far-out party-goers in hip huggers, granny glasses, go-go boots and tie dye parted a wall of swinging psychedelic love beads to enter Girl Scout headquarters, the scene of the 2010 Girl Scouts Feelin’ Groovy Urban Campout.

WHO CAME: Kimberley and Farrell Layton were there sporting make-love-not-war gear while Ann and Ben Haddad arrived in way out flashback style. Emcee Carol LeBeau’s duds brought out her inner Cher and Gerry Keshka modeled a buttoned up vintage Scout Leader uniform. John and Molly Cartmill, Lori and Mark Rappaport and Jim and Betty Brayshay surveyed the huge variety of silent auction items. Rana Sampson and Mayor Jerry Sanders enjoyed time with Melissa and Ed Cook. Charles Foster, Mitch Mitchell and Mel and Linda Katz decked out in their flower child best shared a laugh with Phil and Catherine Blair and Linda Spuck. Carol and Ed Hidalgo took in an archery lesson while Evan and Kim Kleber observed from psychedelic beanbag chairs. Cool Art Schmidt and Patricia and Charlene Sinay exchanged peace signs with Chris Pryor.

THE CAUSE: Girl Scouts San Diego-Imperial Council serves over 30,000 local girls ages 5–17, providing opportunities to develop courage, confidence and character in an all girl environment. Programs offered include a full range of age appropriate camps, activities, events, virtual programs and travel opportunities for girls to experience independently or within a troop.

THE CREATIVE: An Austin Powers look-alike (Yeah, baby!) posed for photos with a classic flower power VW bus and a gaggle of darling scouts in uniform passing out daisies to greet their guests. Hula-hoops transformed into giant peace signs hovered over the colorfully lit party area under strings of twinkling lights by Peterson Lighting. Elaborate outdoor staging by Kleege Industries and Event Technology Services graciously framed the engaging musical stage show of outta sight 60’s favorites by The Heroes, and Pacific Event Productions provided eye-popping mod table décor. Catering by The French Gourmet included comfort food like macaroni and cheese, served in martini glasses, plus teriyaki chicken skewers and tray-passed chile-corn soufflé. Dinner was flank steak and shrimp, and for dessert devotees could scamper to the grassy area for hot smores. .

THE GOOD HEARTED: Presenting Sponsor Geico led a gang of groovy event underwriters along with AT&T, Little Brownie Bakers, Union Bank and Katherine D. White. Rounding out this hip group dedicated to enriching the lives of San Diego’s girls were Super Dentists, Barbara and David Groce, Issa Family Foundation, Wells Fargo, San Diego County Credit Union and Sycuan. Right on!
