Lyric Opera San Diego welcomed soprano Priti Gandhi, one of its most illustrious alumni, onstage at a reception after her concert to support the Lyric Opera. Now among the brightest young talents in the opera world, Gandhi made her professional debut with Lyric Opera San Diego and has gone on to perform at opera houses all over North America and Europe. Accompanied by Dr. Nicolas Reveles at the piano, the effervescent soprano returned to her home company for her first ever solo recital filled with an eclectic selection of beautiful music from the world of opera, musical theater and art song.

Who Was There?: Greeting Priti on the stage of the Birch North Park Theatre following her inspired performance were Teresa and Merle Fischlowitz – their generous gift made the celebration possible – and guest artist Laura Parker. Delighted to be a part of the evening’s festivities, Dr. Paul and Anita Strauss joined Simi and Parviz Foroozan in marveling at the event’s success. Lyric Opera Artistic Director Jack S. Montgomery took in the evening’s magic as did San Diego Opera general and artistic director Ian Campbell. Their presence personified the Lyric Opera’s dedication to developing professional artists. Reflecting on the dazzling progression of her career, including her highly-acclaimed debut performance as Musetta in San Diego Opera’s production of La Boheme -- Priti offered special thanks to Jack Montgomery and Lyric Opera general director Leon Natker as her opera 'parents.' "They put a young singer on their stage years ago who didn't know what she was getting into - but they helped me understand as the years went by."

The Cause: Lyric Opera San Diego (LOSD) has been bringing accessible, affordable opera and musical theater productions to San Diego since 1979. A vital part of LOSD’s mission is commitment to education. The company offers a Summer Academy for the Performing Arts where talented middle and high school students receive intensive training. During its regular season, the Lyric Opera presents preview performances to students and social service organizations throughout San Diego County.

The Good Hearted: A small army of volunteers joined forces to create a perfect-pitch evening for all in attendance. Special thanks to Teresa and Merle Fischlowitz for underwriting the program, long-time supporters not only of Lyric Opera San Diego, but also of Priti herself starting nearly 20 years ago when she began her career. Among the patrons who attended the recital were Kathy and Bob Cueva, Rod and Linda Whitlow, Leanne and David Lynn, Barbara and Lenard Gosink, Dale Fisher, Jane and Peter Polgar, Randy Gibson, Terry Clark, Loretta S. Godfrey, Ginger and Robert Wallace, Joan Henkelmann, Peter Manes, Patricia Maxwell, Merle Wahl, Anita and Paul Strauss, and Melinda and Peter Vuchetich.

The Creative: The painstakingly restored 1928 elegance of the historic Birch North Park Theatre stage made an ideal setting for this glittering reception of fans, friends and Lyric Opera supporters. Champagne, desserts and appetizers were underwritten by the Lyric Opera Board of Directors and catered by Diana Vassall-DuMelle and Pam Stompoly-Ericson with help from Roberto and Kathleen Cueva and Robert Borntrager whose tasty appetizers and petit dessert treats were served on elegant tiered displays.
