Comic-Con: Last-Minute San Diego Survival Tips

Information, transportation and celebration of the city

    By Tue, Jul 20th, 2010

Comic-Con Week is upon us. You've got your pass, just enough clean underwear and a clear plan for the panels and exhibit booths you need to see. Maybe you've been to San Diego dozens of times, maybe you're a newbie. Either way, here are a couple last-minute tips on life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness downtown:

    Horton Plaza.

Information Center: For those in need of formal knowledge and guidance of the city's layout, there's a Downtown Information Center offering maps, coupons and local advice. It’s on the second level of Horton Plaza. Please don't get lost trying to find the information center, because they're the ones with all the answers and directions.

Transportation: Downtown will be a flurry of mortals and immortals during Comic-Con, and it's highly recommended that, unless you have a guaranteed parking spot, park your Batmobile and ride the trolley line. And, get familiar with the city’s bus schedule through the bus route map or online trip planner. If you get down to the streets and decide to use the Pedicab service (bicycle cabs), ask for their rate beforehand. It's a great, green way to navigate the streets, but there are often complaintssome Pedicab drivers overcharge. Don't try to read their minds. Communicate.

Movie Theaters: If you and fellow Con-ers are not satisfied with sneak-peek movie clips or movie-star panels, downtown houses two movie theaters full of the summer's flicks. Regal Plaza 14 is located near Sam Goody ‎in Horton Plaza and another, Gaslamp Stadium 15, is located just a block away from Horton (Fifth Avenue, between G and F streets).

Shopping: Still got some bills crinkling in your Punisher coat pocket? San Diego is home to a number of places that will take your money in exchange for retail goods and services. The phantasmagoric Horton Plaza has awesome shops, postmodern architecture, confusing pathways and a balanced variety of small food spots for a quick bite to eat...At Seaport Village, find an assortment of boutiques, shops, restaurants and a totally legit hangout called the Upstart Crow Bookstore & Coffee House.

Drug Stores: CVS has a couple locations downtown, one in Horton Plaza and one just five blocks from the convention center (Market Street between Sixth and Seventh). There's also a Rite Aid on Fifth and Broadway, and the local Allen Pharmacy is on Sixth and B Street. (If you are looking for “that kind” of drug store, the Beneficial Care Collectiveis a medical marijuana dispensaries for the downtown area. But, don't forget to bring a California ID and California Doctor's Recommendation along with you.)
