Ingrid Croce, an icon of the San Diego dining establishment, introduced Mayor Jerry Sanders as he joined chefs and restaurateurs from across San Diego County at a press conference Thursday morning (Jan. 4, 2007). The event, held at The Fish Market on the waterfront, gave local chefs a chance to show off some of their signature creations and to celebrate the launch of the 3rd annual San Diego Restaurant Week festivities.

San Diego's culinary scene has experienced a renaissance in recent years and has become one of the finest and most eclectic dining destinations in the United States. Restaurants are a driving force in San Diego's economy, generating more than $3.7 billion in taxable revenue and yielding more than $291 million in sales tax for the city, "Something we really appreciate", quipped Mayor Sanders. The food industry is the biggest growth area in terms of revenue, employment and new business opportunities, employing 95,000 people in San Diego County.

The growth of new business provides an opportunity for old and young to explore the food trade, giving San Diego national and international recognition as a destination for aspiring chefs and restaurateurs.
