San Diego's "June Gloom" is rearing its ugly head.

But while this less than inspiring weather is the root of more than a few discouraging sighs around town, the fact is summer is just around the corner. That means trips to the beach, baseball, barbecues and other fun activities will be on the menu.

And part of the program is looking good while partaking in those activities. Here is a list of a few ideal places to create the proverbial lean, mean, fitness machine for the summer, and to keep the engine running season after season:

Flo Fusion Fitness, 2555 El Camino Del Rio South, Mission Valley, 619-794-2740: Recently opened, this local gym is considered the brainchild of Dr. Flora Hyacinth. A past track and field athlete, the St. Lucia native and San Diego resident has competed in three Olympic games. Given Hyacinth's degree in linguistics from the University of Alabama, she can talk a good game as well.

But there's not a lot of gabbing to be done in her "Train Like an Olympian" fitness philosophy. Flo Fitness Fusion offers a core body workout that combines yoga, pilates and resistance training in a 50-minute, three-day-a-week workout. FFF boasts several flat screen televisions in the facility, with Hyacinth showing how the routines should be done.

Flo Fitness also provides chiropractic services, massage therapy and nutritional advice.

Lava Sport and Fitness/Boxing Club, locations in La Jolla, La Mesa, Kearny Mesa, Point Loma and Pacific Beach, 858-622-1903: These establishments all were previously called "The Boxing Club" (Kearny Mesa and La Jolla still are). But don't show up expecting to be knocked out with a right hook to the jaw. Lava bills itself as providing a "nontraditional, non-threatening gym."

Despite the name change at other locations, plenty of cardio combat, kickboxing and boxing classes are available at all stops. Mixed martial arts, yoga, muay thai kickboxing and other activities are also offered. More San Diego locations are in the works.

EZIA Human Performance, 2052 Corte de Nogal, Suite 160, Carlsbad, 760-804-1700: The crowd here ranges from weekend warriors to top-tier athletes, such as Olympic snowboarder Lindsey Jacobellis. EZIA was formed by Olympic trainers Isaiah Truyman and Jason Waitman and offers private coaching, nutrition help and physical therapy. There are also enjoyable amenities such as a driving range and juice bar. New location.

FIT into SUMMER, University of San Diego, 5998 Alcala Park, San Diego, 619-260-7751: The drop-in summer program starts on June 20 and is open to students, staff, alumni and special guests. The first week is available to anyone who cares to participate in free Boot Camp Blast, indoor cycling, yoga, Pilates and other programs on the menu, as well as injury rehabilitation and prevention and massage. Other programs are offered as well.

Hike Bike Kayak San Diego, 2245 Avenida de la Playa, La Jolla, 858-551-9510: A little different, but a must if you want to be outside. This 11-year-old multi-sport tour operator offers kayaking, biking, hiking and walking tours throughout San Diego. Hike Bike Kayak's calling card is its "Hike/Bike/Kayak Tour," which includes a La Jolla Sea Cave kayak trip, a La Jolla bike tour and a hiking trip to the Torrey Pines reserve. Other programs, tours and special events are offered, including doggie paddles. That's right, they offer pooch kayaking.

Fitness Together, 4019 Goldfinch St., San Diego, 619-714-0014: The Mission Hills club is touting its "Summer New Years Resolution," aiming to help those who want to firm up any ever so jiggly body parts. But it doesn't stop there,Fitness Together emphasizes personal training and customized workout plans as a way of improving everything. FT's Web site is a good source for advice as well.
