The Morning Commute in a Cross-Border Reality

Introduction to a series by Dr. Ariel Ortiz

I’m a surgeon. For more than ten years I have driven to work at OCC Medical Center where I perform bariatric surgery. I do this without much thought and certainly without any fanfare. In fact, it’s an ordinary commute not unlike that of thousands of San Diegans who head out each morning with the goal of making it to the office on time. What makes my daily ritual a bit different than some, however, is that I move from one country to another. My commute for over a decade takes me across the U.S./Mexico border.

The fact that this happens without incident or any attention is a testament to the fact that we live in a multi-cultural, economically diverse world where business flows smoothly and effortlessly between nations. It’s an amazing reality that we seldom think about, but it is a reality that helps distinguish and shape the San Diego financial climate.

In my professional life, I carefully consider all of the elements that are at play at any given time. As a surgeon, my patients’ well-being is of the utmost importance. I only do what’s safe. I only do what is prudent. As an American citizen and homeowner who travels across the border on a daily basis, the same rules apply. I do what makes sense... and for me that means hopping in my car, turning on my favorite CD, and cruising effortlessly across the border. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Here's a video that I made showing first-hand just how seamless it is to move from San Diego to the Obesity Control Center in Tijuana.
