A judge says San Diego can go ahead with an oceanfront fireworks display on the Fourth of July, a decision that also temporarily spares tens of thousands of other local festivities from rigorous environmental reviews.

Superior Court Judge Linda Quinn on Friday put on hold for 90 days her sweeping ruling that briefly jeopardized fireworks shows and many other events in the nation's eighth-largest city.

The judge wants the city back in her courtroom Aug. 31 to explain what it has done to comply with her ruling that makes fireworks shows and other events subject to review under the California Environmental Quality Act. Her ruling came in a lawsuit over a Fourth of July show in the city's La Jolla Cove.
