San Diego NewsSouthern California Start-up Kijubi Continues Healthy GrowthBy Tony Cooper • Tue, Sep 27th, 2011 One of the pleasant problems about San Diego is that there is so much stuff to do. Whether one is a local or a tourist, the cavalcade of possibilities --- from the upper reaches of North County to the border, from the coast to far East County --- is enough to keep the head spinning for weeks. That's why Kijubi exists. It is the aim of this company to make planning leisure activity more, well, leisurely. The Laguna Beach-based start-up has been in its current form about three years. Kijubi bills itself as "an experience marketplace dedicated to aggregating and organizing" fun things to do, originally starting out as a portal focused on southern California and Florida. However, growth has enabled Kijubi to expand its reach to 19 states and Washington, DC. It also serves foreign markets such as Mexico, New Zealand, Europe, Australia and South America. "Things are going well,'' said vice president of sales Julie Berry." The summer was a busy season. We were getting a lot of bookings in Florida and Nevada. "We want to be kind of a one-stop shop for travel. We wanted to offer everything you could possibly do in that area. We want to have an abundance of things to do all over the country.'' As is the case with hospitality companies, Kijubi offers the opportunity to make airline and hotel reservations and other travel deals. But what separates Kijubi from the travel-oriented sites is planning what you do once you get there. This is its bread and butter, not how to get you there and where you'll stay. "We're the Expedia for activities,'' said Berry. "We want to appeal to not only travelers, but to locals.'' And San Diego, as activity-oriented a place as exists in the country, is a big market for Kijubi. Possibilities include everything from a Palomar Mountain Glider Flight in Warner Springs to a private group paintball match in Lakeside or Alpine to Air Combat, where guests fly a real fighter jet, with the help of an active duty Navy or Marine Corps pilot, in an attempt to "take out" the enemy combatant. For the less adventurous, there is a kayak tour in La Jolla or the San Diego Bay Prime Rib Dinner cruise. Of course, the usual standbys such as tickets to SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo are also available. "San Diego is one of our top markets,'' Berry said."There's a strong amount of water activities.'' The on-line, things-to-do industry is a big business, and with people more and more using their computers to do everything, it shows no signs of slowing down. Berry cited Viator and Isango as the heavy hitters in the field, but these firms focus on the international scene, she said. Kijubi, on the other hand, mainly has its eyes peeled on the United States. "I really don't know if any competitor is as heavily focused on activities in the US as we are,'' Berry said. "Our focus is on the US. We're taking it one step at a time... we still have a fairly strong international presence, but there are so many thing to do here. We want to saturate the US.'' Berry said the lousy economy and job scene, which are ravaging the country, hasn't had much of a negative effect on Kijubi. "We're not being too impacted by the economy,'' she said."We're growing and adding more activities.'' Everything else aside, the biggest question about Kijubi: What is up with that name? Company co-founders Billy Fried (CEO) and Kilay Reinfeld (president) were sitting around one day, kicking up names for the firm that would be successor to La Vita Laguna and CalActive. They came up with the somewhat phonetic form of what "could you be doing," or Kijubi. "It was a fun, quirky and unique name,'' Berry said. "It's not serious, we just wanted to have a lot of fun with the name and make it memorable.'' Initial returns, however, were akin to a pie in the face to potential customers. "A lot of people were like, 'What is this?''' said Berry. "A lot of (people) didn't know how to pronounce it. "But as soon as you told them what it meant, everyone went crazy for it.'' That's one activity Kijubi hopes is always on its menu.
