San Diego NewsWeekend Construction to Hamper San Diego Trolley, Downtown TrafficBy Kris Somera • Tue, Oct 18th, 2011 Today, the San Diego Association of Governments released a statement from their headquarters, revealing that major construction will force the weekend closures of eight San Diego trolley stations and several downtown streets, which will inevitably impact thousands of downtown motorists and public transportation riders. Rail work on the LOSSAN coastal rail corridor is also part of the $620 million Trolley Renewal project that will upgrade the preexisting Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) and allow for low-floor automobiles to operate throughout the trolley system. Construction on the LOSSAN coastal rail will consist of adding an additional track around the North County area of Carlsbad. Both construction projects are expected to highly improve the convenience and speed of San Diego’s public transportation. A press conference scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, October 19 is expected to shed the specifics on what commuters can expect to experience and how to plan accordingly. As one of the oldest transit systems in California, with historical services starting in 1886, the entire MTS ridership in San Diego County currently hovers around 280k riders daily.
