Courtesy photo The sprawling Gaslamp Quarter location deserted recently by Australian bar-restaurant Bondi has been leased by the owners of Donovan’s Steak & Chop House. It is slated to open this summer as a martini bar. A name has not been selected, but it will carry the Donovan’s brand, according to a spokesperson. The site of the former Bondi is 333 Fifth Avenue, near the base of the Gaslamp’s main drag. Bondi had a three-year run but failed to fill the eatery/drinkery on a steady basis. Donovan’s has two locations in San Diego—in the Golden Triangle and downtown near Petco Park, just a few blocks from the Bondi site. Donovan’s is locally owned by business/sports activist Dan Shea. “I’m excited about expanding the Donovan’s brand into San Diego with some new venues,” says Shea. He says the target age group is 40-60 (35-65ish) who want to have a drink downtown after dinner. The focus will be on martinis, with a lot of appetizers. The front of the space will be the martini venue, with the back area to be used as an entertainment venue. Shea says it will be, “upscale, with moderate pricing.” He's not worried about competition with the downtown Donovan’s, nor with the opening this summer of a new bar at the corner of Market and Fifth overseen by celebrity chef Brian Malarkey and nightlife impresario James Brennan. “We’ll be a much different demographic than Brennan,” says Shea.
