    Fluxx: San Diego’s Vegas Experience

The designer of our hippest clubs—Stingaree, Side Bar, etc.—says new spot will be most creative yet

    By Thu, Feb 11th, 2010

In a month’s time, the likely new “it” downtown nightclub will open for business, and pleasure. “It” will be called Fluxx, a tricked-out dance-focused club, housed at the site of the former Aubergine (Fourth and Island).

During a recent hard hat tour, designer Davis Krumins was explaining the “modern organic with sex appeal” approach to the interior design. With nearly $1 million spent on sound and lighting, paired with contradictory designs that marry the sleek (acrylic) with the primitive (hanging balls of moss), Krumins believes San Diego is about to receive its first Las Vegas-style club experience.

Aubergine was segmented into three rooms; Fluxx is one big circular (11,000 square foot) dance party. The dance floor dominates the middle of the room (total capacity: 904), and it’s made of a wood base that is promised to allow dancers to feel the music’s base beat come up through their feet.

The dance floor is absolutely the showcase space. “Don’t come here to dance if you’re self conscious about your dancing,” says Krumins, adding, “I won’t be dancing.”

Three bars surround the dance floor. Each will be adorned with eclectic gizmos and doodads. The biggest bar is the one with the 2,000 hanging moss balls. A smaller bar will have a backdrop of white shingles and planters; another will have a rough-hewn, “modernistic and campy” bar top cut from a tree.

There will be tables for bottle service—expect vodka and gin, with all the accoutrements, to sell for $350 a bottle. Krumins thinks the premier bottle service area will be a multilevel “tree house” that’ll be set near the main bar. You and 10 friends can rent the space to sit, dance and have, as Krumins says, “super-duper fun.”

This all might sound a bit loony-toony if not for the record of success shared by Krumins and club’s operating management, The RMD Group (Rodrigo Iglesias, Mike Georgopoulos and Dave Renzella).

All have been involved, in varying ways, with downtown’s hottest spots, including Stingaree and Side Bar. Krumins designed both, including the recent redesign of Side Bar, as well as Universal in Hillcrest and the granddaddy of our urban uber-clubs, On Broadway. The latter was a project overseen by Mike Viscuso who also hired Krumins to design the acclaimed The Kress Hollywood (yes, in Hollywood).

Krumins believes San Diego is ready for the “Wow!” factor that Fluxx promises.

“In 10 years, San Diego has transformed so much,” he says. “It’s come so far that you really have to be creative. San Diego is ready for this.”

If you’re a dance machine that’s ready for an occasional blast of liquid nitrogen gas that Krumins says will blanket the room so thoroughly you won’t be able to see a foot in front of you for several seconds, mark your calendar. The grand opening of Fluxx is March 12.
