San Diego DTownJamal Williams’ Late-Night Food SpreeThe former San Diego Charger paid a nice price for overtime eating By Ron Donoho • Mon, Mar 22nd, 2010![]() Jamal Williams: His hunger knows no time limit. Courtesy photo When you’re 6-foot-3, weigh 350 pounds and play in the NFL, eating is a round-the-clock course of action. Even in the wee hours when the restaurants are supposed to be closed. A source at the downtown Hard Rock Hotel San Diego says former San Diego Chargers defensive standout Jamal Williams showed up at Maryjane’s over the weekend at 3:05 a.m. That’s five minutes after closing time for the late-dining retro eatery. After a 12-year career as a Bolt, Williams was cut earlier this year and now plays for rival Denver Broncos. But an employee recognized the big man with a big heart, and the late-night shift lasted an hour longer for Williams and three friends. The group munched on pepper jack hamburgers, fries and hot wings. Mmmm, the late-night snack of champions. Okay, Williams never won a Super Bowl as a Charger. But he’s a winner in the eyes of the staff that stayed up late to feed him. Before leaving, Williams asked the server how many employees had stayed around just for him. A half dozen was the answer. So Williams peeled off six $100 bills—one for each. It’s probably not too bad a dent on the 34-year-old’s wallet—the Broncos just signed Williams to a 3-year, $16 million contract, with $7 million in guaranteed money.
