Adrian Gonzalez is easily one of the top players in the MLB, and on top of that has a positive attitude no matter where he goes.

After the San Diego Padres got knocked out of any chance they had to make the playoffs in 2010, the team decided to make some changes. Part of those changes required the release of All-Star first baseman, Gonzalez.Gonzalez has received numerous awards in the past 5 years with the Padres, including two Gold Glove awards received in 2008 and 2009.

However, since his trade to the Boston Red Sox, Gonzalez has kept up his high-standing records. He participated in the 2011 All Star game, and was the only player to bring in a run for the American League with his solo home run. He then was selected to hit in the Home Run Derby and came in second to Robinson Cano.

The Red Sox jumped on the opportunity to land Gonzalez, and in April, they made a deal to hold a seven-year contract for $154 million.

Although Gonzalez can’t do anything about the move, he has left a legacy in San Diego by opening the Gonzalez Sports Academy (GSA) in 2010 with his brother, Edgar Gonzalez.

The Gonzalez brothers played together on the San Diego Padres for two years, 2008 and 2009. Edgar is now signed to a minor league contract with the Padres rival team, the San Francisco Giants.

The brothers grew up in San Diego and resided in Chula Vista where they attended high school. The Gonzalez Sports Academy is located in Chula Vista and acts as a multi-sport training facility for any type of workout and any sport played.

For baseball alone, the facility has four batting cages, equipped with Iron Mike pitching machines that can be used for either baseball or softball, and two pitching mounds made of dirt with a bullpen.

There is also a 60-yard turf track, located indoors, with a laser timing system to gain speed and agility, as well as a 4,000-square foot turf area.

This training center is unlike most, with full-sized volleyball courts, tennis courts and trainers to help enhance any athlete’s sports admirations.

GSA has so much to offer that professional players such as Nick Hundley, Will Venable and of course, Edgar and Adrian Gonzalez have trained there, as well as a number of other professional baseball and football players.

Although it fits the need of professional players, the training center also caters to youth players and local high school teams.

During the off-season, both Adrian and Edgar Gonzalez are around to host batting seminars and other baseball-related tips of the trade. The Gonzalez family owns the gym and stays active in making sure it relates to all types of athletes.

It was clear after speaking to the Director of Marketing, Bo Navarro, that although GSA can mold to any type of individual, the facility has a great setup for high school and professional athletes.

“Each individual athlete that walks in here gets a customized workout,” Navarro said, “There is a reason why you are doing the workouts that you are doing.”

Navarro has also adhered to the fact that about 99 percent of the players who walk in to GSA are looking to play college sports, and the other 1 percent are looking to go pro.

“We pick your brain,” Navarro said, “We find out what type of athlete you are, what type of discipline you play and where you want to go.”
