Jets Defense Overwhelm Chargers in Loss to New York

No one gets out alive, especially in New York, when you play as poorly as the Chargers did Sunday afternoon, blowing a 21-10 lead and coming home with a 27-21 loss to the New York Jets.

It could have been a fine team win, instead, it is an across-the-board team loss. This hurts badly; hurts physically, emotionally, and aesthetically too. Upset at all the comments about only beating tomato can teams this year, the Chargers still haven't beaten a good team. The loss to New England is now followed by a loss to the Jets. Norv Turner's record in East Coast / Deep South games in his fifth year in San Diego is now (4-14). He hasn't beaten that loudmouth Jets coach, Rex Ryan, either.

Pick any part of the game, and you can pick the Chargers apart. Monday's film session with the players will be like an Halloween video.

Quarterback Philip Rivers throws two more interceptions, one on a deflection off Vincent Jackson, the other on a late-arriving pass to Jackson. His high priced receiver was not open much, limited by a hamstring and blanketed by the Jets superman cornerback Darrelle Revis.

Tight end Antonio Gates, playing with a painkilling injection in his foot, caught three passes early but virtually disappeared the rest of the game. Malcom Floyd went MIA, even when covered by the erratic Antonio Cromartie. It says on the roster that Patrick Crayton is still with the team, but not much as a pass catcher. An odd catch or two from the other tight end Randy McMichaels was not enough to make a difference.

Ryan Mathews and Mike Tolbert ran hard in spurts, but both got hurt. Mathews with a thumb, and Tolbert left with what appeared to be a hamstring; there was really no one else to carry the ball.

The Chargers defense hurt this team, from start to finish. Tons of defensive line offside penalties, triggered by Jets QB-Mark Sanchez's cadence, or just the Chargers anxiousness to fire out of the three point stance. None-the-less, that was a lot of free yardage that set up short yardage plays. San Diego had 13 penalties in all, not so much from tough physical play, but more like mental breakdowns.

And the run defense pushed all over the field, gave up 162 yards rushing. They never made a stop when it really counted.

Antoine Cason had another bad day, in a series of bad games. Look for Cason; he was the one chasing Plaxico Burress, who has gone from a prison cell to the end zone with 3 TD catches.

His running mate Quentin Jammer got burned on a couple of plays and flagged on another. Name a penalty, San Diego sampled it. Offsides, defensive holding, pass interference, facemasks.

For all that was written and said about linebacker Takeo Spikes arrival, now I know why no one brought up the fact he cannot cover. Jets tight end Dustin Keller is still running crossing routes and catching balls against Spikes.

And in the open field, missed tackles on big plays sure hurt the team. Eric Weddle, Cason, Jammer. Guys wearing green jerseys going by them.

And if we didn't have enough to analyze, we must not forget the all important third phase of the game, special teams. Richard Goodman brought balls out of the end zone four times, none of which got big runbacks. Crayton fielded a punt inside his own five, then signaled fair catch and tried to run with another punt, triggering a penalty. Everytime he touched the ball, he put Rivers in bad field position.

Left tackle Marcus McNeill came off with what looked like a neck stinger. Phillips limped off late with a hamstring. The running backs got dinged too.

For the Jets, Mark Sanchez was under quarterback siege all day. He had no rhythm, and he too got hurt by bad penalties, including three from his Pro Bowl center Nick Mangold that wiped out a touchdown and two other big gainers. But despite the relentless pressure around him, he hung there and made plays with few mistakes.

LaDainian Tomlinson started quick, got hit, and sat ont he sidelines the rest of the day with a towel on his head, a sure sign of a concussion. Shonn Greene, the feisty running back, hurt a calf, but kept coming back, and kept getting yards, especially in the fourth quarter, to help them get the win. At one point, the Jets had their punt returner in at running back because there was no one else, and even Joe McKnight made quality plays.

The Jets win was about Rex Ryan's relentless approach to defense. It got better as the game went on. Just like his mouth, which never stops running, his defense never stopped playing. This loss was not so much on Chargers coach Norv Turner, but more on his players, as their quality of play got worse as the game went on.

For once, when the Monday press conference rolls around, Norv Turner will be correct when he uses his pet phrase, "it's correctable." It better be, if the Bolts are to stay a player in the AFC West.

The New York Sanitation Department makes pick ups around 4am each morning near the Meadowlands Stadium. The Chargers game tape, and team performance will likely be out there on the curb.
