Whether you are vacationing in San Diego or are lucky enough to be a local, here are some great summer options for entertainment ofsports lovers: The Sockers will hold a free clinic. Courtesy San Diego Sockers San Diego Padres (All Summer) As of Memorial Day, the San Diego Padres are surprising everyone. Taking the family out to beautiful Petco Park is a great way to enjoy America’s favorite pastime. For those with young children, try sitting in the “Park at the Park” where the tickets cost only $5 and your kids can run around and play. If you choose to sit out there, your best view of the action will be a large screen in the park that broadcasts the game. San Diego Derby Dolls (June 25-27) The San Diego Derby Dolls will be hosting Battle of the Bank III June 25-27 at the Del Mar Arenain the San Diego County Fair Grounds. Battle of the Bank is an annual all girls banked roller derby tournament featuring eight teams from different cities fighting it out over three days in a double elimination tournament. Times and ticket prices have not yet been made available. San Diego Sockers – Soccer Clinics (June and July) The reigning Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL) champion San Diego Sockers are holding a free (with your fair admission) two-hour, public soccer clinic at the San Diego County Fair on June 13. Team members will be available for autographs. Following the clinic, the Sockers will play an exhibition game against the San Diego Boca FC...In the morning on June 13, youth teams from the Magadalena Ecke Family YMCA will play several matches...For more formal soccer instruction, Sockers star Aaron Susi will be hosting four, four-day soccer Summer Skills Camps for participants of all skill levels. The cost of each camp is $125 and each participant receives a San Diego Sockers ball and three tickets to a game next season. Please see the Summer Skills Camps web site for dates and location of the individual camps. San Diego Flash – Tryouts and Games (June and July) San Diego’s new outdoor professional soccer team, the San Diego Flash, is now 5-0 in their exhibition season. On June 5, the Flash will be holding open mid-season tryouts. Tryouts will be held at Balboa Stadium at 8:30 a.m. Tickets for Flash games are $5 for adults only $1 for children under 14. All proceeds for this inaugural season benefit local charities. Locations and times of games vary. Please see the San Diego Flash Web site for more information...A June 12 game benefits the Kick for Hope Foundation--Kids Helping Kids Through a Shared Passion for Soccer...A June 26 game benefits the San Diego Chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation--Making wishes come true...The July 9 game benefits the Kick for Hope Foundation San Diego Sea Lions – (June and July) The San Diego Sea Lions squad was formed in 1988 to give post-collegiate players a place to play competitive soccer. From June to early July the Sea Lion will host four home games on Saturday nights. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children 14-and-under and seniors 65 and over. Philip Rivers Football Camp (July 10 and 11) San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers will be hosting his first Philip Rivers Football Camp at UC San Diego's NCRA Fields on July 10-11 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The camp is for boys and girls ages 7-14. Rivers promises to throw a pass to every participant. Campers receive a t-shirt, Rivers’ autograph on a camp team photo, seven hours of expert instruction, an opportunity to win prizes and lunch. The cost is $199 and proceeds benefit the Rivers of Hope Foundation that aids San Diego foster children. Over The Line - 57th Annual World Championship Tournament (July) The Old Mssion Beach Athletic Club (OMBAC) is at it again with the 57th annual World Championship Over the Line (OTL) Tournament. OTL is a uniquely California beach tradition. The game is a form of softball and the tournament is limited to 1,200 teams of three people. The tournament includes nearly 2,400 games played in two weekends with 52,000 expected to attend. OTL is free to the public and held at Fiesta Island on Mission Bay. The tournament runs July 10 & 11 and continuesJuly 17 and 18 when quarterfinalists take the courts. Play is from 7:30 a.m. to dusk. Please note that OTL is not suitable for minors. OTL team names are often raunchy and contestants and spectators are frequently intoxicated and scantly clothed. Despite its risqué nature, OTL is for a good cause. All proceeds from the event go back to the community in OMBAC supported charities. If you attend, remember to abide by OTL’s “Five B” rules: No Bottles, Babies, Bowsers (dogs), Birds, or Boas (Constrictors). Bicycle use is limited as well. San Diego Chargers Training Camp (July and August) The San Diego Chargers have announced that this year several of their Training Camp practices will be open and free to the public. Some players will be available for autographs after most practices. Parking is not available at the Chargers facility; however some street parking is available. Attendees should arrive early and prepare for a short walk to get into the Chargers practice fields. Exact dates of Training Camp have not been announced, but it should begin in late July.
