San Diego SportsSuper Bowl QB Drew Brees Is On A RollFormer Charger stars as sushi chef, dentist in San Diego commercials By Dave Good • Fri, Feb 5th, 2010New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees is playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday. But he couldn’t have known that last summer when he agreed to play the part of a clairvoyant sushi chef in a web commercial filmed in San Diego. On screen, kitted out in full sushi chef garb, Brees serves a creation he calls, "Saints going to the Super Bowl" to a couple of unsuspecting guys who apparently don’t recognize him. ![]() Drew Brees is on a roll. Courtesy photo “After you taste it,” says Brees, “you’ll be a believer.” The unwitting diners are played by local actors Chris Lusti and Ron Jones. “We just walked in to Watami Sushi in Scripps Ranch,” says Jones, “and asked them if it would be okay if we shot a commercial and put Drew Brees behind the counter. They were all for it. They took pictures with Brees after we were finished.” The former Chargers QB also filmed another commercial that day in which he played the part of a dentist. “Come back in February,” Brees. the dentist. tells a patient, “after the Super Bowl.” The spots were created by Coronado’s Eddie Grace Creative Media Group to promote the fantasy football site NFPost.com. Partial proceeds from the site benefit the Brees Dream Foundation, which in turn helps fund cancer research, and provides care and opportunities for children in need. “Since he practices here in San Diego during the off season,” says Jones, 44, “they shot it here, and they contacted my friend Dave Romero to produce it.” Romero is also based in San Diego and works with Eddie Grace. “The dental office and the sushi restaurant just happened to be next to the gym that Brees works out during the off season,” says Jones. “It’s the same gym that rehabilitated his shoulder.” So, how were Brees’ acting skills? “He was awesome from the moment he walked up and introduced himself as Drew," says Jones. "He was like, 'Hi, I’m Drew.' I was, like, I know...There wasn’t really a script. We just improvised and repeated the scene and got it down.” And while Jones can’t say for certain whether Brees is a better actor than the Indianapolis Colts' Payton Manning, who Brees will meet in Super Bowl XLIV on Sunday, Jones is positive about who he’d like to see win the big game: “The Saints.” Both of the commercials starring Brees can be seen at www.eddiegrace.com.
