The supercross motorcycles come roaring into Qualcomm Stadium this week. But one of the most interesting riders won't twist a throttle.Instead, Jimmy Button will use pedal power to fight off his own paralysis. "I'm more than a miracle, that's for sure," Button said. The 37 year-old San Marcos resident raced supercross motorcycles until 11 years ago when a freak training accident at Qualcomm Stadium left him paralyzed from the neck down. "Oddly enough I didn't break any bones," Button said of the fall that sent him tumbling over the handlebars while going an estimated 2-3 miles per hour. "What I did is I ripped all my ligaments off my spine," Button said. "Both on the front and the back so my head just went back so far that it just tore all the ligaments off my spine, and that's what pinched my spinal cord and caused my paralysis." Down, but not out, Button decided he would one day walk again.Slowly, he improved to the point where he now has enough mobility to walk and ride a bike. Sunday morning, he plans to roll out on a six-week, cross country ride called Miles For Miracles to raise money and awareness for spinal cord research. "You can do all sorts of things, but why not do something that people said was going to be impossible?" Button said. "I think riding a bicycle across the country is pretty difficult whether you're an able-bodied person or someone like myself that still has some deficiencies. "But, why take the easy route? Make a statement. Make a stand and give some people that maybe are in my position, that were fortunate enough to have that recovery from a spinal cord injury, to know that if you keep pushing, you keep working hard, you can get to a point where you might be able to do this." Button has transitioned from a supercross rider, to a supercross rider's agent. His continued involvement with the exciting, and dangerous, sport fuels his fire to complete his 2,428-mile trek from San Diego to Dayton, Florida. "I'm doing it because I hate to see my friends in wheelchairs," Button said. "When you're in our sport, it's dangerous, there's no question about that. Action sports, motor sports, they're all dangerous. I have too many friends in wheelchairs and I just hate seeing it. I would rather those guys be able to do what I can do now. So if I can do anything to help them out, I'm all for it." Button plans to ride 60 miles per day, with his pregnant wife traveling along in an RV, and Button invites others to ride along with him.
