The Padres Offense Has Disappeared

The Diamondback Beat the Padres 8-0

By Sat, Jun 6th, 2009

The Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde San Diego Padres (25-29) of 2009 have officially reverted back to their Mr. Hyde personality that hides its offense. On Friday night night, the Padres lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks (24-31) 8-0. The loss is their fourth in a row and sixth in seven games.

The home runs are still flying out of Petco, unfortunately not from the Padres’ bats. In the second inning Chris Young hit a solo home run off of Chris Gaudin and that was the entire offensive the Diamondbacks would need to defeat the Padres.

Adrian Gonzalez was 0-for-2 with two walks. This marked the first time in his career that he had multiple walks in four consecutive games. With Scott Hairston on the 15-day disabled list and not providing protection for Gonzalez, it looks now like Gonzales is going to get the Barry Bonds treatment by opposing managers by having their pitchers throw around him, even in situations that do not warrant it.

Most of the Diamondbacks’ offense came in the fifth inning off of Gaudin. With one out Felipe Lopez singled up the middle. Gerardo Parra then doubled down the left-field line scoring Lopez. With Justin Upton at the plate, Gaudin threw a wild pitch advancing Parra to third. Gaudin struck out Upton for the second out. Then he walked Stephen Drew. Mark Reynolds singled to center scoring Parra and sending Drew to third. Reynolds stole second with Chris Snyder batting. Snyder then singled to right field scoring Drew and Reynolds. Young then struck out to mercifully end the inning.

In the sixth inning the Padres had an opportunity to get back into the game. David Eckstein had a lead off single followed by a Gonzalez walk. Kevin Kouzmanoff flied out. Then Chase Headley singled to right. Despite being down 5-0, third base coach Glen Hoffman waved Eckstein home off of Headley’s single. Upton threw home to Snyder who tagged Eckstein out at the plate. Brian Giles then struck out to end the threat.

The Diamondbacks then added a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth.

Tonight the Padres will attempt to once again find their Dr. Jeckyll personality by sending Kevin Correia (1-4) to the mound against Max Schlerteth (2-4).

Note that Jake Peavy was up and about before Friday’s game and participated in batting practice. He looked recovered from the flu that shortened his last outing to a career low one inning. However Buddy Black said, “He is still not 100 %.” Peavy will get an extra day rest and pitch on Monday. Josh Geer will take Peavy’s place in the rotation on Saturday.
