San Diego's Best Resorts
If money is no object, several five-star resorts are well worth staying in when you visit San Diego. Everyone will have an opinion about which ones are best, but some make every list, no matter what your personal favorites are.
Here are some high-end options (in no particular order) when you’re looking for a consummate VIP experience.
Hotel del Coronado. Arguably the most iconic and photographed hotel in San Diego, the Hotel del Coronado is a classic waterfront resort experience punctuated by a long and storied history of hosting celebrities, presidents, and dignitaries who have enjoyed stays since it opened in 1888. It’s located adjacent to Coronado Central Beach, one of the most beautiful and expansive white sandy beaches in San Diego, and within walking distance to Orange Avenue shops and restaurants. It won the AAA Four Diamonds, and Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice awards, among many others.
The Lodge at Torrey Pines. Located north of downtown, Torrey Pines is an all-inclusive boutique hotel experience next to Torrey Pines Golf Course and Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve. The California Craftsman style architecture and suites ranging up to 2,500 square feet evoke visions of yesteryear as visitors look out on one of the most stunning ocean views in San Diego. The Fairmont Grand Del Mar. This is another north county gem that easily competes as San Diego’s best luxury hotel. It’s one of a select few of Forbes's fifteen-star properties worldwide and includes Addison, San Diego’s only Michelin-starred restaurant. Guests can also play on a private Tom Fazio-designed golf course or enjoy a full range of kid-friendly and active outdoor activities.
THE US GRANT. This historic downtown hotel in the Gaslamp Quarter was built at the turn of the 19th Century by Uylsses S. Grant Jr. to honor his presidential father. Since then, it’s hosted 14 presidents, and its central downtown location makes everything an easy walk to restaurants, shopping, and attractions.
Pendry San Diego. This is another Gaslamp Quarter hotel that makes for a more modern experience. It has become a favorite since opening in 2017, featuring 300+ rooms, including 36 suites. It features six restaurants and bars, a rooftop pool, is pet-friendly, and an easy walk to PETCO Park, adding to its allure.
Rancho Bernardo Inn. Head north on 1-15 to take in this sprawling east county luxury resort experience. It is a golfer’s paradise with its recently renovated 18-hole golf course and is convenient to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, nearby wineries, and other top-flight golf experiences. Visitors rave about the resort spa, and kids are welcome with a full slate of activities to keep them on the go.
